A practical introduction to how draft surveys determine cargo quantity for bulk shipments.
A draft survey measures a vessel's draft at fixed marks before and after loading or discharge. Together with density readings and ballast and stores soundings, these readings allow the surveyor to calculate the weight of cargo transferred.
Draft surveys are widely used for bulk cargoes such as iron ore where shore weighing may not be available or where an independent check is required.
